Softball Rallies Past RCB

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. — The Bridgeport Lady Indians used a late surge to secure a dramatic 9-8 victory over the Robert C. Byrd Varsity Eagles on Thursday, scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to complete the comeback.

With the game tied at 8-8, Clark delivered the go-ahead blow with an RBI single, capping a rally that saw Bridgeport erase a five-run deficit. The Lady Indians trailed 7-2 as late as the fourth inning before mounting their comeback.

Robert C. Byrd jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning. Moore drove in two runs on a groundout, and an aggressive base-running play resulted in a steal of home to make it 3-0. The Eagles added another run in the second inning when Barlow doubled to center field.

RCB extended its lead in the sixth inning on a solo home run to left field by Hardy, pushing the advantage to 8-5. However, Bridgeport answered in the bottom half of the inning. Van Zant started the rally with an RBI single, followed by a two-run double from Messenger. Clark then delivered the decisive hit to give Bridgeport its first lead since early in the game.

Messenger paced the Lady Indians offensively with three RBIs, going 2-for-4 from the cleanup spot. Kelley, Van Zant, and Humble each added two hits in the win.

In the circle, Mike earned the victory for Bridgeport, allowing 12 hits and eight runs (five earned) over 6 2/3 innings while striking out seven and walking two. For Robert C. Byrd, Barlow struck out 16 batters over six innings but was charged with nine runs (five earned) on nine hits.
