The Bridgeport High School Lady Indians outlasted Elkins High School in a high-scoring battle Friday, defeating the Lady Tigers 12-10 behind a 17-hit offensive performance.
Bridgeport raced out to an early advantage and built an eight-run lead by the third inning before holding off a late Elkins rally. The Lady Tigers chipped away at the deficit with a series of timely plays, including doubles, a solo home run, and productive outs, but Bridgeport was able to maintain the lead through the final inning.
The Lady Indians struck first in the opening inning. Messenger doubled down the left field line to drive in a run, while Clark added an RBI groundout and Knight followed with an RBI single to right field.
Elkins answered in the bottom of the first, tying the game with the help of a Bridgeport error, an RBI double from Mahanes, and an RBI groundout by Washington.
Bridgeport took control in the second inning, erupting for six runs on six hits to claim a 9-3 advantage. The key hit came from Gibson, who delivered a two-run double during the inning.
The Lady Indians added two more runs in the third as Van Zant singled down the right field line and Gibson added another RBI with a sacrifice fly.
Elkins continued to battle, including a solo home run to center field by Mahanes in the fifth inning, but Bridgeport held on for the victory.
Mike earned the complete-game win in the circle for Bridgeport, allowing 10 runs — four earned — on nine hits over seven innings. Mike struck out seven and walked three. Lambert took the loss for Elkins after allowing 12 runs, 10 earned, on 17 hits across seven innings.
Knight, Messenger, and Van Zant each collected three hits to lead the Bridgeport offense. Knight, Gibson, Humble, and Clark each drove in two runs, while Mike added two hits at the plate. The Lady Indians also turned two double plays defensively.
The Lady Indians will travel to Keyser on Saturday. Bridgeport must beat the Golden Tornado twice to advance to the state tournament.
