MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The Bridgeport Lady Indians used a big first inning and timely late offense to secure a 13-7 victory over the Bethlehem Center Lady Dawgs at Milan Park in Morgantown on Tuesday night.
Bridgeport wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, erupting for multiple runs in the bottom of the first inning. Mahaylee Messenger sparked the rally with an RBI single, while Amayah Clark and Addison Mike each drew bases-loaded walks to bring in runs. A passed ball added two more, giving the Lady Indians an early cushion.
The momentum carried into the second inning, as Bridgeport extended its lead behind a combination of clutch hitting and execution. Messenger delivered a double, Emma Dale added a sacrifice bunt, and Breanna Laxton followed with an RBI single to keep the pressure on Bethlehem Center.
The Lady Dawgs responded in the fourth inning with a two-run home run to left field, cutting into the deficit. Bethlehem Center continued its push in the fifth, scoring five runs on five hits.
Holding onto a narrow lead, Bridgeport created separation in the bottom of the sixth. Reese Van Zant drove in a run with a single, and Knight delivered the biggest blow of the inning with an inside-the-park home run that plated three, pushing the advantage to 13-7.
Mike earned the win in the circle for Bridgeport, tossing a complete game. The right-hander allowed nine hits and seven runs over seven innings, striking out six and walking three.
Offensively, Gracia Knight and Messenger each drove in three runs to lead Bridgeport. Messenger paced the team at the plate, going 3-for-4. The Lady Indians also showed patience, drawing 15 walks, with Mike, Van Zant, and Avery Humble each earning three.
Bridgeport (2-0) returns to action Thursday when it hosts Robert C. Byrd.
