1995 Cheer Squad Honored

After years of coming close, 1995 was the watershed moment for the Bridgeport cheerleading squad and girls athletics in general at BHS.

That team brought home the school's first girls state title, beating Buffalo-Wayne by 15 and their nemesis Tolsia by 30 at the Charleston Civic Center (now the Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center), and are members of the inaugural class of the Harry Green Bridgeport High Athletics Hall of Fame.

BHS had been second to Tolsia in the previous five state competitions.

"Waiting three hours for the results was nerve-wracking," Cara Arbogast told the Ki-Cu-Wa yearbook staff for the 1995 edition. "But the feeling of grabbing that trophy was worth it."

Bridgeport qualified out of regionals in Fairmont and drew the third performance spot the night before competition, going right after Tolsia, which had an off day with their mounts, according to the Ki-Cu-Wa.

"When I saw Tolsia fall, I couldn't help but feel excited," Stephanie Liebig told the Ki-Cu-Wa. "However, I knew that we still had to go out there and do our best."

Finally, the plaque was theirs.

"This championshpi was special becuase this group of girls combined the talent, dedication and determination it takes to win," coach Janie Riley told the Ki-Cu-Wa.

The class will be announced one member at a time and announcements will continue as the full class is unveiled.

The inductees were selected via voting by a committee comprised of members of the Bridgeport High community.
