Musgrave Named To Hall

You wouldn't know it based on the past decade and a half, but there was a time when Bridgeport wasn't winning state baseball championships.

You wouldn't know it based on the past several years, especially last year, but there was a time when West Virginia was an also-ran in college baseball.

A common thread to jump-starting both programs was Harrison Musgrave, the next announced member of the Bridgeport High Athletics Hall of Fame.

"It's pretty cool to be part of a class with some good people," Musgrave said. "I was just building off of the backs of a lot of very successful people who built it from the ground up and turned their sports into mainstays."

Musgrave was part of a state runner-up team in 2010, just the second BHS squad to make it to Charleston since the 2000 championship team.

Two games stick out to him from his high school career.

The first?

"Pitching against Martinsburg and closing that game out to go to the AAA state title game my senior year for the first time for Bridgeport for a while. Everything was very unique that group of seniors that year. That was awesome," Musgrave said.

The second?

"We played Nitro my junior year and we lost 1-0. I gave up a home run that went about 600 feet to a kid named Matt Frazier. I ended up playing with him and a few other kids from Nitro at WVU," Musgrave said. "It was always a good laugh and a good reminder. They were the best team that I played my two years at Bridgeport and it was a good pitching outing and a great overall baseball game. Even though the outcome wasn't what we wanted, it was still a unique experience."

Bridgeport then participated in every state tournament from 2012 through 2022, winning in 2014-2021, only interrupted by the cancellation of the 2020 season due to the pandemic.

Then he went up to Morgantown, where he was the Big 12 Pitcher of the Year in 2013 and an eighth-round draft pick of the Colorado Rockies in 2014.

"It's pretty unique, being there for my last years of high school and meeting friends and getting to play for arguable the most successful head baseball coach in the state of West Virginia (in Robert Shields)," Musgrave said. "He had such a deep background of knowledge in baseball and passed on certain attitudes and belief systems that I was able to use in college."

He spent 2018 and 2019 in the majors with the Rockies, making 45 appearances in relief and winning 2 games.

The class will be announced one member at a time and announcements will continue over the next three weeks.

The inductees were selected via voting by a committee comprised of members of the Bridgeport High community.
