The Bridgeport High School Indians used a big third inning to power past Elkins High School Tigers 7-2 on Thursday at Bridgeport High School.
Elkins struck first in the opening inning when Trent Stone delivered an RBI double to give the Tigers an early 1-0 advantage.
Bridgeport responded in the bottom of the third and never looked back. Owen Sondericker highlighted the inning with a three-run triple, while Kasen Baun added an RBI groundout as the Indians surged ahead 4-1.
Sondericker also dominated on the mound for Bridgeport, tossing a complete game. The right-hander allowed just three hits and two runs — neither earned — over seven innings while striking out nine and walking none.
Owen Stanley took the loss for Elkins after allowing six runs, four earned, on seven hits over five innings. He struck out one and walked five.
The Indians finished with nine hits in the victory. Sondericker paced the offense with three RBIs while going 2-for-4 at the plate. Guy Avolio and Brooks Vass also collected two hits apiece for Bridgeport.
Luke Rohrig drew three walks as the Indians showed patience at the plate, working six walks overall. Bridgeport was also aggressive on the bases, stealing seven bags in the contest. Aidan Dunn and Avolio each recorded multiple stolen bases.
For Elkins, Stanley and Stone each drove in a run, while Stanley, Stone, and Isaac Shepler recorded the Tigers' three hits.
With the win, the Indians advance to the state tournament and will play on June 9th at Jake Cook Field in Huntington. The seedings and matchups will be released at a later date.
