BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. — A massive sixth inning powered Bridgeport to a commanding 14-1 victory over Wheeling Park on Friday.
Guy Avolio delivered the biggest blow of the night, launching a grand slam to left field as part of an 11-run sixth inning that put the game out of reach. He finished with four RBIs on the strength of that one swing.
Bridgeport first got on the board in the third inning, taking advantage of a Wheeling Park error to grab a 1-0 lead.
The Indians then erupted in the sixth, stringing together timely hits and capitalizing on opportunities. Owen Sondericker drove in two runs with a single, Kasen Baun added a two-run triple, and Dom Fazalare chipped in with an RBI single. An error and a hit-by-pitch also brought in runs before Avolio capped the inning with his grand slam.
Thomas earned the win on the mound, allowing just one unearned run on six hits over 4 1/3 innings while striking out four. Vass added 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to help close out the victory.
Bridgeport totaled nine hits in the game, with Rohrig leading the way from the leadoff spot with two hits. Sondericker contributed by drawing three walks and stealing two bases as part of an aggressive effort that saw the Indians swipe five bases overall.
