Football Bounces Back

Bridgeport's offense was slowed before its first play by a clock adjustment following the opening kickoff.

It was a temporary barrier: Gavin Williams went 69 yards down the right side on the opening snap.

That set the tone as the Tribe, slotted 8th in the latest Class AAA playoff ratings, rebounded from a heartbreaking loss at Fort Hill last week to dispose of the Spring Valley Timberwolves, 45-7, at Wayne Jamison Field.

In 2 ½ quarters of offensive action before being rested, Williams ran 9 times for 205 yards and 4 touchdowns and Graham Vincent and Gabe Martin also found the end zone for Bridgeport.

Jaylen Brown's kick following Williams' run gave Bridgeport a 7-0 lead with 16 seconds gone.

"We started fast and that fast start lets the kids go out and play care-free," Bridgeport coach Tyler Phares said. "Any time we get behind the sticks a little bit, we play a little timid and we didn't want that. The kids came out and did a really good job of setting the tone."

Spring Valley picked up a fourth-and-2 from their own 28 on an Ethyn Washington run to the 30, but back-to-back false start penalties killed the drive and forced a punt.

Vincent's 15-yard punt return put the Tribe at the Timberwolves' 37-yard line to start.

A 5-play Bridgeport drive, highlighted by a 12-yard Eli Knight rush, was capped by a 8-yard Martin TD run with 3:15 left in the first quarter: 14-0.

A 10-yard Colton Mathis dart on third down moved the chains for Spring Valley on its next drive and the Timberwolves faced another third down as the second quarter started.

Two plays later, Max Conley stopped Mathis for a loss on fourth-and-5 to turn the ball over on downs at the Spring Valley 36.

"Max is growing up a lot for us and getting some big minutes here. We had to throw him into a big situation at Fort Hill. It was good to see him step up big tonight," Phares said.
