The Preston Knights will be glad to see
Gavin Williams graduate.
Â
Gabe Martin, too, for that matter.
Â
A year after Williams rushed 6 times for 285 yards and 3 touchdowns and also ran a kickoff back for a score in Kingwood, he shone on Senior Night at Wayne Jamison Field, scoring 2 receiving touchdowns, 1 on the ground and 1 more on an interception return in a 63-14 Tribe victory that clinched a 34th straight winning season.
Â
Martin, who was injured in that game last year, had a much better night this time around, rushing for 3 touchdowns and 188 yards on 9 carries.
Â
Bridgeport forced 4 turnovers.
Â
"We were opportunistic at times. There's things we need to clean up," Bridgeport coach Tyler Phares said. "(The seniors) have been with me the entire time. I took over as head coach when they were in eighth grade, so I've watched these kids grow up into very good young men. I couldn't be prouder of them."
Â
Bridgeport scored on their opening drive as a few first-down runs set up a 44-yard pass from
Graham Vincent to Williams.
Â
Jaylen Brown's PAT gave the Tribe a 7-0 lead.
Â
Preston moved the chains on an 11-yard rush by Crosby Taft, but a
Tristin Noble sack of Rowan Cramer two plays later stunted the drive and forced a punt, which
Graham Vincent returned to the Knights 38.
Â
An 18-yard gain by
Gabe Martin on the second play of the drive set up a 16-yard Williams TD rush: 14-0 with 5:54 left in the first quarter.
Â
Two stops for loss by the Bridgeport defense forced another Preston punt.
Â
Gains of 22 and 14 by Martin moved Bridgeport into the red zone and Martin finished the job from 12 yards away: 21-0, 1:18 left in the first quarter.
Â
Preston got on the board on an 81-yard touchdown pass from Cramer to Xavier Walcott with 28 seconds remaining in the quarter: 21-7 after Brady Taylor's kick.
Â
A 51-yard catch-and-run from Vincent to Williams restored the 21-point gap, 28-7, on the opening play of the second quarter.
'
"We tried to put in a little bit more in offensively and the kids executed it well," Phares said.
Â
Preston lost 13 yards on 3 plays before a short punt set up Bridgeport at the 26.
Â
A flag only gave Martin more yards to add to the stat sheet: 36-yard TD run, 35-7.
Â
A 16-yard rush by Cramer and a third-and-7 pass to Taft for 11 yards moved the chains to midfield.
Â
But Williams ran an interception back 77 yards to the house: 42-7 with 5:44 left in the half.
Â
Preston got another score on a 60-yard strike from Cramer to Jake Gibson that followed a third-down roughing the passer flag on Bridgeport on the previous play: 42-14, 4:38 to go in the second.
Â
Max Conley just missed a kickoff return off the squib kick, with Kaleb Stone saving the day, but
Eli Knight scored on the first snap of the ensuing drive: 49-14, 4:22 remaining in the half.
Â
"He's got to put it in the end zone," Phares joked of Conley. "We'll hit that hill a little bit next year. It was a great returm."
