Bridgeport's
Mikaela DeMoss has been a standout in distance running during her time at BHS. Now, she hopes to continue contributing to a winning program at the collegiate level.
Â
On Tuesday, Jan. 13, DeMoss signed to compete in cross country as well as in track and field at Fairmont State University. This will also allow her to be part of Fairmont State's indoor track and field program, which is in its initial season this year.
Â
DeMoss was a contributor this school year to the girls winning the Class AAA state cross country championship. It was the first title for the girls' program in school history.
Â
"Fairmont State seemed like the best fit for me education wise and for my sports and extracurriculars," said DeMoss. "I just think I'm going to have a good time there."
Â
DeMoss and the Indians had a good time this year in cross country. DeMoss finished 16th in helping BHS get to the win at the state competition. She posted her best time in the Region I meet in 2024 where she finished the field in 19 minutes, 23 seconds.
Â
"I was planning on (going to compete in college) before (the state title)," said DeMoss. "It really boosted my excitedness to continue."
Â
Cross Country Coach Nathaniel Lutyens thinks Fairmont State is getting a solid addition to both rosters.
Â
"Mikaela was such an essential part of the team. She was one of our captains and one of our team leaders in terms of helping create the culture that led to our success," said Lutyens. "Her effort, not just this year, but across her career was significant."
