Homecoming Win

Class AAA No. 1 Bridgeport improved to 4-0 with a 63-14 victory on homecoming Friday night at Wayne Jamison Field.

Gavin Williams ran for 247 yards and four touchdowns, had eight PAT kicks, seven touchbacks, an interception, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and at least one tackle for a loss in the first half.

Gabe Martin also scored four first-half touchdowns and had 116 rushing yards.

Friday's win also marked the 50th for Tyler Phares during his tenure as head coach for the Indians.

The first play from scrimmage was a 63-yard touchdown for Williams. His PAT made it 7-0 and the Indians were off and running and never looked back.

"Every single game we want to return the kick for a touchdown, if not we want to score on the first play," Williams said. "We want to get off to a quick start and set the tone from there."

Williams picked up the first interception for the BHS defense on the Colts' first drive and after a nice return on the pick, the single wing offense responded with another quick strike as the next play from scrimmage was a 9-yard touchdown run from Martin.

The next PB drive was also halted by Williams as he forced a fumble, recovered it and three plays later Martin was in the end zone again, this time from 19 yards out.

Williams added touchdown runs of 62, 58 and 53 yards, while Martin, who now has 14 on the season, scored on runs of 40 yards and 1 yard.

The Colts avoided a shutout when Cam Bennett tossed a 67-yard touchdown pass to Patrick Webster.

The first-half dominance also made the BHS coaching staff a little lighter in the pocket as some more pizzas will have to be purchased.

"For those that don't know, we call it a pizza block," Phares said. If you sprint down the field and block a safety or a corner on a touchdown of 50 yards or more and we buy a pizza for any kid who did that. We had a few pizza blocks tonight which was great. I'm proud of the kids and it's awesome to watch the effort of them sprinting down the field and blocking for a teammate."
