After being part of the record-setting 400 freestyle relay team during preliminaries,
Oren Sutphin was the Bridgeport swimmer that went to WVSSAC officials to make sure the song the Indians wanted as their walk-out music for finals was approved.
Â
It's usually a matter of lyrical content if a song is allowed or not. This wasn't an issue for Sutphin and company as they chose the famous Imperial March, also known as Darth Vader's theme, from the Star Wars franchise.
Â
The empire, the rebellion, jedi, sith, it doesn't matter. It's a song that means it's time to take care of business. And the Indians did just that, capturing the Class AAA team championship with 201 points over runner-up George Washington with 148. It marks the third boys team title for the Indians and coach
Jan Grisso. The previous two coming in 2010 and 2019.
Â
It wasn't the only team title Grisso added to her resume as the girls also captured the Class AAA title, finishing tied for first in Class AAA with John Marshall at 115 points. For the girls it marked the fourth state title in school history, the previous ones coming in 1999, 2000 and 2008.
Â
"This is a first for me, BHS coach
Jan Grisso said. "We've had a runner-up and a state champion in the same year but never both. This is amazing. I'm so proud of both teams."
Â
The boys winning the state title is not a huge surprise as the Indians have been heavy favorites in a season where their depth and talent led to them winning every single meet they competed in.
Â
Although the BHS girls have plenty of talent, it wasn't clear earlier in the season they had the depth to contend for the team title. But they showed steady improvement and by the time the state meet rolled around, depth was also a team strength.
Â
"Winning a team title is so emotional, it's something I hope everyone gets to experience,"
Amelia Romano said. "Winning a individual title last year was great but everybody got to feel the way I did last year."
