Football Blows By Nitro

Bridgeport football coach Tyler Phares wants his team to be as advanced as possible while utilizing its unique Single Wing offense.

To this point, no opponent of the Indians has had anything close to answer for it.

The latest example of that came Saturday evening, with the Class AAA No. 3 Indians scoring seven first-half touchdowns on 26 offensive plays to cruise to a 70-21 win against No. 6 Nitro at Wayne Jamison Field.

"We practice really hard at what we do," Phares said. "We really work tremendously and we want our kids to get their PhD on offense — not their bachelors. "It's really important to us that we show multiple looks and do a lot of things, but we also have key breakers and we try to figure out exactly what the defense is reading and use those reads against them. Very proud of those kids for executing at a high level all season."

BHS (12-0) has scored 49-plus points in every game this season.

The Indians forced a three-and-out on the game's opening series, and then moved 57 yards in four plays to score their first touchdown on Josh Love's 37-yard run, leaving the home team with a 7-0 lead at the 8:07 mark of the opening quarter.

The first of Alex Moses' two interceptions led to the Tribe's second touchdown, which came on Jack Spatafore's 3-yard run after BHS began its second series at the Nitro 30. A Nitro (10-2) penalty on the point-after play led to the Indians electing to go for a two-point conversion, and they converted it when Timothy Jeffress crossed the goal line on a run.

Nitro, with one of the most productive passing attacks of any team in the state, answered on the second play of its third series when quarterback Josh Moody threw an 80-yard touchdown pass to Malachi Thompson, allowing the Wildcats to trail 15-7 with 3:11 left in the opening quarter.

Although the Wildcats recovered their ensuing onside kick attempt, they were unable to capitalize in the form of points. Instead, Bridgeport got the ball back at its own 18, and on the second play of the third series, Moses ripped off a 72-yard touchdown run on what marked the final play of the first quarter.

The two-point try run was stopped short, leaving BHS with a 21-7 lead.

The Wildcats scored a second touchdown immediately after getting the ball back when Moody found Luke Shaffer for a 79-yard gain through the air, allowing Nitro to pull to within seven, although it would get no closer.

Love's 32-yard touchdown allowed Bridgeport to go back up by multiple possessions, though a botched snap on the point-after play left the Tribe lead at 27-14.

"We had a safety fall down for a touchdown and they made a really nice play on the other one on a 1-on-1 ball," Phares said. "Good teams, especially in the playoffs, are going to make plays. You can't get down about it. You have to keep rallying and playing football and I was glad to see our kids put that in the rearview mirror quickly."

Moses then came up with his second interception, immediately followed it with a 59-yard run into the red zone and Love recorded his third touchdown of the half on a 10-yard run for a 34-14 lead 7:44 before halftime.

"Alex is a really good athlete," Phares said. "It's taken him a bit to get good in coverage and understanding what we're doing, but now that he has a better understanding, he's shining and doing a lot of really good things for us."

Nitro had an opportunity to score again and draw closer, but a turnover on downs at the Tribe 16 put an end to that threat. The Indians then moved 84 yards to score their sixth touchdown — this time on Jeffress' 8-yard run for a 41-14 lead with 1:40 left in the half.

Jon Bender's recovery of a Moody fumble set up the Tribe's seventh and final first-half touchdown, which came on Moses' 40-yard run after the Indians took over at the Nitro 11.

At the break, Moses had 190 rushing yards on 10 carries and Love had rushed seven times for 109 yards.

"You can't simulate [Bridgeport's Single Wing] in practice. That's the thing," Nitro coach James 'Boom' McKinney said. "We tried to prepare for it and did the best we could this week with the guys we had, but it's something you don't see very often. They run it well."

Gavin Williams, who handles placekicking duties for the Indians, returned the opening second-half kickoff 78 yards for a touchdown, and Moses ran in the two-point play to make it 56-14.

Love added a fourth touchdown on a 19-yard run later in the third, and the Indians' final TD came with 7:52 remaining in the fourth on Graham Vincent's 15-yard run.

Moody threw his third touchdown pass with 6:12 remaining on a 47-yard strike to Thompson to put a cap on the scoring.

"We thought we could score a few more points," McKinney said. "We shot ourselves in the foot the first couple series. We knew we'd have to get off to a quick start to be able to compete with the points they can put. They're a great football team with discipline and my hats off to them. There's a good chance that's your state champion."

With the win, Bridgeport advances to play at No. 2 Fairmont Senior in a semifinal next week. The Indians defeated the Polar Bears 56-28 in Week 10 of the regular season.

"This is the second season. Nobody is going to care," Phares said. "We don't get a whatever point lead because we beat them in the regular season. Our kids have to focus in and understand we have a chance to go play for a state championship game against a very good Fairmont Senior team."
