For the 12th time in school history, Bridgeport will play for a state championship in football.
The third-seeded Indians (13-0) secured a spot in the Class AAA state title game next Saturday in Charleston with a 36-7 victory against No. 2 Fairmont Senior on Saturday at East-West Stadium.
Bridgeport will face No. 4 Herbert Hoover, which defeated top-seeded Princeton, 35-12, on Friday in the other Class AAA semifinal game. The Huskies will also enter the state title game unbeaten at 13-0.
It will mark the second-ever meeting between Bridgeport and Herbert Hoover. The Huskies defeated the Indians at Wayne Jamison Field in the first round of the 2002 playoffs, 13-6.
The two nearly scheduled a regular-season meeting for 2024 but the logistics on the Hoover side couldn't be ironed out.
In its 11 previous state championship game appearances, Bridgeport owns a 10-1 record. The most recent state title coming in 2019.
Alex Moses, Timmy Jeffress and
Josh Love scored on first-half touchdown runs as the Indians built a 20-0 halftime lead on the way to defeating the Polar Bears for the second time this year. Previously they won 56-28 in another game played at East-West Stadium in Week 10 of the regular season.
Jeffress finished with a game-high 124 yards on 14 carries and two touchdowns. Moses had 73 yards on 16 carries and two TDS, and Love added 84 yards on 14 carries and a TD.
As has been the case all year for the Indians, the defense was once again lights out. The Polar Bears did put up 178 yards yard rushing which is the most BHS has allowed to an opponent this year. The Indians came into the semifinal clash surrendering just 33 on the ground per game.
The Polar Bears' prolific passing attack however was held to just 48 yards as the school's all-time passing leader Brody Whitehair was still not at 100 percent health wise for the game. He split time with Logan Canfield and the two shuffled in and out of the lineup continually, which definitely had an early effect against the Indians.
"It was tough at first for sure," BHS coach Tyler Phares said. "They did a really good job of keeping us on our toes early on but I thought our kids did a great job of adjusting to it."
