Football Wins In Philippi

Gabe Martin rushed for 165 yards and two touchdowns, Graham Vincent also found the end zone twice and put up nearly 200 yards of passing and rushing and the Bridgeport Indians passed their first road test of the year, defeating the Philip Barbour Colts, 52-3, at George Byrer Field at BC Bank Park on Friday night.

"We knew they wanted to be physical and come down and blitz a lot. We wanted to meet that challenge," Bridgeport coach Tyler Phares said. "We wanted to run Gabe and see how well he runs the ball between the tackles in adverse situations. It was fun to watch him get after it tonight."

After three Martin runs gained 23 yards, Bridgeport went to Gavin Williams for the 53-yard TD with 9:43 left in the first quarter.

Jaylen Brown's kick gave Bridgeport the early 7-0 lead.

Following a Philip Barbour three-and-out, Williams gained 13 on third-and-11, then Martin navigated the ball to midfield.

Vincent had just enough to move the sticks on fourth-and-3, then, after a Eli Knight run for 11, Martin broke through the congestion at the line of scrimmage for a 29-yard touchdown.

Bridgeport doubled its lead to 14-0 with 1:54 left in the first quarter.

Robbie Jones kept for a 44-yard gain to open the PB drive, but the Colts turned the ball over on downs on a dropped lateral on fourth-and-3.

Bridgeport took over at its own 34, handed to Martin for 17 yards across midfield, then, after Knight picked up a few stripes, Vincent sprinted 47 yards for the Tribe's third touchdown of the evening from a third different player.

"I saw Graham do things that we needed to do," Phares said. "He was a tough runner, putting the shoulder pads down, doing his best on fourth-and-short. I'm super proud of his effort."

Brown's boot made it 21-0 with 9:03 left in the half.

Bridgeport got another stop, but Vincent's long punt return inside the PB 5 was nullified by a flag.

A 40-yard pass from Vincent to Sean Veltri navigated the ball to the PB 25, then Martin picked up the last quarter of the field: 28-0, 6:54 left in the second.

Jones was flushed left on PB's next snap, lost the ball and Max Conley scooped, ran and scored: 35-0, 6:39.

"Any time a defense can get a scoop and score right there, especially from the mike position, that's excellent to see. Very happy for Max to get that, but also happy for the guys that got the strip and made that happen," Phares said.

The Colts and Indians exchanged punts, then PB's next drive was ended by the horn.

Ayden Thorne's 42-yard field goal got Philip Barbour on the board with 7:09 left in the third quarter.

Bridgeport got a long pass from Vincent to Aiden Gorby, but was plagued with penalties, bringing out Brown for a 38-yard field goal attempt.

The lead was back to 35, 38-3, with 11:57 left in the fourth quarter.

After a PB punt, a 17-yard run by Knight moved the Tribe inside the Colts 10.

Vincent finished the drive on a 4-yard rush: 45-3 with 4:25 left.

Bridgeport recovered a fumble with 2:26 left and the second unit found the end zone with 33 seconds left on a Zach Hickman rush.

Jackson Nicewarner's kick set the final score.
