In a display of complete domination, the Bridgeport Indians Boys Soccer team beat the Preston Knights 7-0, running their unbeaten streak to 24 matches over a full calendar year.
Bridgeport played a connected brand of soccer, keeping possession, moving the ball, while always looking for opportunities for runs. This is how complete the win was, the entire eighty minutes were played in the Knights defensive zone. After the match, first year Coach Nathaniel Jones said, "The last few games we haven't done really well passing and moving off the ball, being efficient in space, and offensively we haven't worked the ball with switches. So I asked them going into tonight, can we do two or three touches and move off of each other and work on chemistry a little bit more, they did exactly what I asked them".
That chemistry was displayed throughout the line up but was particularly noticeable between senior leaders Grayson Church and Riel Figueroa. The first goal of the game was set up by a slick pass from Church to Figueroa giving him an open run to the net. The second goal of the game Riel returned the favor giving Grayson a free run. In regard to his senior leaders' chemistry, Church and Figueroa, Coach Jones said, "Sometimes you get star players, you can get two or three and sometimes they can butt heads and get in each other's way because they want the ball and have a hunger for the ball, but they have done really well working off of each other, to find space, and open up opportunities for the other person".
Riel Figueroa achieved a rare feat during this three-goal game for him, he exceeded 100 goals for his high school career. In describing how rare this is Coach Jones said, "I've never seen it happen here, so it's very unique". Describing what makes Riel such a prolific goal scorer, Coach Jones said, "He's just hungry, he doesn't give it up, if he misses the shot he's not going to be afraid to shoot again, he's not going to give up until he gets what he wants. He is so physically demanding; he has a tenacity about him".
In many statewide circles, Bridgeport is being nicked as the team to beat in AAA soccer despite losing a huge senior class they rode to the state championship last year. To have that level of success with this team Coach Jones said, "We need to continue to build chemistry. Last year was the most seniors we had that started, I think it was seven, so there is a lot of holes to fill and some of those holes are being filled with younger players, sophomores. We have to continue to be encouraging realizing some of these guys are young and we have to teach them, not just us coaches, but the senior leaders on the field too. It will take the whole team to make it deep into the playoffs".
If the first seven games of this season are any indication, Bridgeport soccer fans need to be planning on a trip south for a championship game at the end of the season.
