Track Successful First Day Of States

The Bridgeport High School track and field teams turned in a strong opening day performance Friday at the Class AAA state meet, highlighted by two individual state championships and several athletes advancing to Saturday finals competition.

Haydn Henderson claimed the girls long jump state title, overcoming difficult weather conditions to secure the victory with a leap of 16-05.50.

Scarlett Edgell also scored points for Bridgeport in the event with an eighth-place finish at 14-10.75.

In the girls shot put, Becky Pepper-Jackson earned another state championship for the Indians with a winning throw of 38-11.75 on her final attempt of the day. Isabella McCullough added a 10th-place finish with a throw of 30-06.25.

The Bridgeport boys also delivered a strong showing. The Indians' shuttle hurdles relay team of Sawyer Culicerto, Graham Vincent, Gabe Martin, and Aiden Gorby placed second with a time of 59.11 seconds, finishing behind Point Pleasant High School.

Jaylen Brown finished fourth in the boys shot put with a throw of 44 feet even, while Harrison Hall placed 13th at 42-11.50.

Bridgeport's girls 4x800 relay team of Bethsayed Dankiewicz, Isla Tobrey, Mikaela DeMoss, and Aria Selario opened the meet with a seventh-place finish in 10:15.04.

The girls shuttle hurdles relay team of Tobrey, Kennedy Wolfe, Carley Lattea, and Katie Backus finished eighth in 1:09.48.

Gorby also tied for ninth in the boys long jump with a leap of 19-04, while the boys 4x800 relay team of Graham Northey, Parker Muncy, Andrew Wagner, and William Northey finished 15th in 8:51.95.

Several Indians also advanced to Saturday's track finals.

Will George posted the top qualifying time in the boys 200-meter dash preliminaries at 22.31 seconds, while Gavin Williams qualified third at 22.39.

Williams also placed third in the boys 100-meter dash preliminaries with a time of 11.10 seconds, while George qualified fifth at 11.35.

Martin advanced to the finals in the boys 110-meter hurdles after finishing eighth in preliminaries with a time of 16.42 seconds. Culicerto narrowly missed qualifying, placing ninth at 16.57.

Emma Kniceley-See narrowly missed the girls 100-meter dash finals, finishing ninth in 12.91 seconds. Lattea and Edgell also fell short of qualifying for the girls 100-meter hurdles finals after placing 15th and 16th, respectively.

Aria Selario finished third in the 300-meter run while William Northey and Tory Zorick finished 11th and 12th.
