The Bridgeport Indians track & field teams captured both the girls and boys Class AAA Region II titles at Tornado Alley.
Â
The girls easily pulled away from the field, amassing 211 points to beat Elkins (135), Hampshire (133), Keyser (86), Robert C. Byrd (71) and Lewis County (38).
Â
"They showed up ready to compete," girls coach Allie Burton said. "They have the ability. They've showed it all year. We talked about that a lot leading into today, just come do what you've done every week. Nerves are okay."
Â
The boys' team race came down to the last event, with the Tribe's victory in the 4x400 relay in a time of 3:32.49, run by Kieran Moore, JT Ritter, Troy Zorick and Sawyer Culicerto, allowing them to edge host Keyser, 181.5-179.
Â
"I didn't get a chance to even look at the score going into the 4x4," boys coach Grant Burton said. "I knew that we had a team together that wanted to qualify and wanted to place high. I tell you what, yeah, four kids ran it, but every single one of their teammates were lined around the track cheering them on. That was as much a team victory as a 4x4 victory."
Â
Elkins (129.5) was a solid third, followed by Hampshire (110), Robert C. Byrd (49) and Lewis County (35).
Â
The top two finishers in each event automatically qualify for state competition next weekend in Charleston, then the eight best 'wild' card finishes from all four regions that didn't automatically earn a spot join them.
