Box Score The Class AAA defending state champion Bridgeport High School football team kicked off the 2025 season in dominating fashion, defeating Buckhannon-Upshur 62-14 Friday at Freal "Red" Crites Memorial Stadium.
Â
It marked the 15th consecutive game that ended with a running clock for the Indians, who accomplished that feat in all 14 games of the 2024 season.
Â
Friday's game looked a lot like any of those 14 from a year ago as Bridgeport's single-wing offense couldn't be stopped and the Indians' defense couldn't be run on.
Â
The Indians finished with 457 yards on the ground and nine touchdowns. BHS held B-U to – 55 yards rushing.
Â
It didn't take BHS to establish its single-wing dominance as
Gabe Martin scored on a 1-yard run to cap five-play game-opening drive.
Gavin Williams booted his first of eight PAT kicks to make 7-0 and the Indians were off and running.
Â
As impressive as the Game 1 victory was, the Indians did have to overcome some adversity along the way.
Â
Senior
Bryson Lowther, who missed all of last season with a knee injury, suffered what is believed to have been a minor injury in practice on Thursday. Lowther was slated to start on the offensive line and at defensive end.
Â
His anticipated return to the lineup was instead met with a test to the BHS depth and the test was passed with flying colors. J.P. Cortez started at left guard and was part of a line that dominated up front the entire game.
Â
Defensively,
Sean Veltri moved from linebacker to defensive end and
Brody Jeran started at linebacker. Both had huge games.
Â
"It was awesome to see the way they played," BHS coach Tyler Phares said. "I'm super proud of Sean. Sean's a kid that I've been tough on in practice because we see a lot of potential there. He got thrown into a tough position tonight because we weren't planning on playing him at defensive end.
Â
"We've played him a decent amount at defensive end in spots but he showed what he can do tonight and it was fantastic.
Â
"Brody stepped up big time and made a bunch of plays tonight. It's been a tough learning curve for him coming to a new offense, a new defense (Jeran played at B-U previously). Coming home, it was a lot of emotions for him but he really stepped up."
