Williams Runs Wild In Win Over Fairmont

On a night where the Bridgeport Indians secured the program's 15th perfect regular season, a school record was broken by a wide margin. Junior running back Gavin Williams rushed for 404 yards as the Indians defeated Fairmont Senior, 62-28 to complete a 10-0 regular season and win a state-best 24th consecutive game.

Williams needed just 20 carries to find the end zone five times. He rushed for 283 yards in the first half and surpassed Landyn Reppert's previous program mark of 317 yards during the third quarter.

"It is a combination of the two. Gavin is special in the open field. We know when he gets in the open field, he can score any time. Whenever [the offensive line] are doing a good job of opening up holes and getting to the second and third level, he is dangerous," said Bridgeport head coach Tyler Phares.

"That's Bridgeport football. We had to win up front. If we don't win up front, we don't win ball games around here. We pride ourselves on our linemen and what they can accomplish and what they can do. We've got an overlooked group. There's a lot of people that get a lot of praise all throughout the state. Our kids don't get enough. And they should. You saw it again tonight. They put it on display. Gavin did a great job. But he's got to have holes to run through. And those kids, they were doing it with an 11-man box."

"Yes it is cool to break a record but it would be cooler to win a state championship," Williams said. "I will celebrate it tonight and celebrate with the guys. But after that, it is on to win the state championship and get a second one."

The Indians scored touchdowns on their first nine possessions of the game. In the first quarter, the Polar Bears and the Indians traded scores with frequency. While the Indians received two touchdown runs from Williams (52 and 17 yards) and Eli Knight (16 yards), Anthony Smith accounted for three total touchdowns in the opening frame for FSHS. Smith connected with Jason Walker (55 yards) and Rudy Carillo (63 yards) on lengthy touchdown tosses. Smith also rushed for a 7-yard score, giving the Polar Bears (7-2) a 21-20 lead at the end of one quarter.

"We were just getting used to their speed," Phares said. "We can do what we can do in scout team. But until you get to see it — there were not a ton of changes, just better execution."

"It definitely gave us a little tension and a little adversity. We needed that," Williams said. "We are going to face tough teams in the playoffs. We needed that bit of adversity in the first half and fight back and win."

The Indians would not allow another score until the final minute of the game when Smith hit Grant Nuzum in the end zone for a 17-yard score. That came after the Indians scored 42 unanswered points. At one point in the second quarter, the BHS defense forced eight consecutive incompletions.

"We knew coming in, it is always a battle. They're always going to come out and score and do a good job with that," Phares said. "I was happy the way our kids took to coaching, bounced back and really just made adjustments."

In addition to Williams' five touchdown totes, Knight scored twice and Kasen Baun and Sean Veltri each added scoring runs.

The defending Class AAA champions enter an off week leading into the postseason.

"With a bye week, you don't want to get complacent going into the playoffs. Ten straight weeks of football is a lot. I am excited for these guys to get a little bit of a break and see where it goes from there."
