Bridgeport High School sophomore
Audrey Kerr was named the Big 10 Conference Girls Golf Player of the Year and the Indians finished as the runner-up in Monday's conference tournament at the Preston Country Club on Monday.
Â
This marks the first year the Big 10 has awarded both Boys and Girls Player of the Year honors.
Â
"That's something the Big 10 coaches voted on adding and Audrey was fortunate enough to be chosen" BHS coach Chris Kerr said.
Â
"You try to separate being a coach and a Dad when you are out there but I think it means a little more being her Dad. She's had a great season but I'm even more proud of the young woman she is becoming."
Â
Elkins' Drew Hinzman won the boys award and the Tigers' David Baird was named the Big 10 Coach of the Year.
Â
Kerr was tied for the second-best score on the day finishing with a 75. Preston's Robbie Lowe and Lewis County's Scott Underwood also shot 75s.
Â
"There's maybe a little disappointment in finishing second and I think all the kids would say that," Coach Kerr said. "We went 16-1 in conference play, we had a great year and we showed up ready to play today and we played really well. It's something to build off going into regionals."
Â
Kerr, Gerhards and Straley earned first-team all-Big 10 Conference honors which were awarded to the Top 9 finishers.
Â
Bridgeport will take part in the Class AAA Region I championship match next Monday at Highland Springs Golf Course in Wellsburg with Brooke High School as the host.
Â
Other regional competitors are Wheeling Park, John Marshall, Morgantown, University, Buckhannon-Upshur, Preston and Fairmont Senior.
Â
The top two teams from each region advance to the state championship match. Additionally, the top two finishers not on one of the top two teams in each regional earn a spot at states.
