The 2024 high school golf season for Bridgeport will begin on Thursday as the Indians will face fellow Big 10 Conference foe Preston as well as Gilmer County at 4 p.m. at the Bridgeport Country Club.
Â
After two days of practice, second-year coach Chris Kerr is excited to see the season get rolling.
Â
"The first two days were fine," Kerr said. "We did nine holes on Monday. I cut it short because of the heat. Tuesday we went out and played 18 and we had some good scores, I was proud of them. I got to see where the kids were at from their work over the summer. I was really happy with all of them."
Â
Kerr said they will play nine more holes today where the top six for the season opener will be determined.
Â
Competition from within was a successful recipe for the Indians in 2023 as the top six from event to event fluctuated depending on the best scores. Kerr envisions that being a factor again.
Â
"Absolutely we are going to have strong competition again," he said. "We don't have as many kids as last year so there may not be as much variation. It's less kids but we maybe will have a tighter group of scores.
Â
"I'm a firm believer that to get better you have to play good competition. You have to get out there and get pressed. The competition within the team will hone your skills. It will make you better because there is somewhere there behind waiting to take your spot."
