Indians Pounce On Preston

Seven Score In Homecoming Win

Box Score

For the second week in a row, Class AAA No. 6 Bridgeport was without starting wing back Tanner Hathaway and for the second week in a row, Timmy Jeffress helped make sure the Indians' prolific single-wing attack didn't miss a beat.

Jeffress scored a pair of touchdowns and was one of seven different players to find the end zone as BHS dominanted Preston, 52-7, on Homecoming Friday night at Wayne Jamison Field.

His two TDS came on back-to-back possessions as he ran one in from 25 yards out and then caught a 27-yard TD pass.

"I'm happy to get the chance to show what I can do," Jeffress said. "To be out there with my brothers and help keep the offense going.

"It was nice to get a receiving touchdown and good a couple of good runs in."

The win likely secured the Indians' 31st consecutive year of making the playoffs, which is a running state record. Previously this year Bridgeport extended another running state record by securing its 56th straight season without a losing record.

As it has all season long, the BHS defense set the tone early. The Knights, who fell to to 1-6 on the season, had -20 yards at halftime and didn't get on the positive side for yards until after the BHS starters were long out of the game.

Preston especially had a tough time getting to the edges against the BHS defense as any play where the Knights tried to get wide, a swarm of Indians were there waiting. BHS entered the game with a collective 63.5 tackles for a loss and that number increased as they were right around double digits again.

"That's a staple of the program, we sprint to the ball and make plays and I think just about every kid in the program knows that," BHS coach Tyler Phares said. "We sprint to the ball but to make it work, you have to want to sprint to the ball and I think we did that pretty well for the most part."

After forcing a three-and-out to start the game Bridgeport put together a nine-play drive that Zach Rohrig capped with a 1-yard touchdown run. Avery Williams converted his first of two PAT kicks to make it 7-0.

Aidan Sparks forced another Preston punt when he tackled Slaton Manko in the backfield for a 3-yard loss and the Indians needed just three plays to capitalize. Rohrig connected with Donovan Williams for a 47-yard pass, Alex Moses ran for 11 yards and then finished things off with a 1-yard TD run.

Jeffress had his third rushing TD of the season to make it 20-0.

The Indians' buck lateral play has resulted in a lot of long touchdown runs over the past couple of years. On Friday, it led to a big pass play as Spatafore hit a wide-open Jeffress on the first play following a bad snap on a Preston punt attempt gave BHS the ball at the 27.

The Indians closed out the first half with a an 8-yard TD run from Cam Martin, making it 32-0.

The depth of the backfield continues to be impressive for the Indians and it seems to get better and better with each game.

"Those kids work their tails off in practice and a lot of people don't get to see that," Phares said. "When a situation like Tanner going down happens, you get to see all the depth of the program step up and get better."

A week after returning the second-half kickoff for a touchdown, Moses nearly did it again. A shoestring tackle around midfied saved Moses from going the distance, setting for a 45-yard return. The Indians needed just two plays to find the end zone again. Martin ran for 11 and Josh Love followed with a 36-yard run for his 10th touchdown of the season.

Spatafore added a 10-yard touchdown run to extend the Indians' lead to 46-0 late in the third.

Preston got on the board with a 48-yard touchdown run from Sheldon Miller.

The final points of the game came on the longest scoring play in the game as Rider Pepper-Jackson broke loose for a 69-yard touchdown run.

Pepper-Jackson actually finished as the Indians' leading rusher with 97 yards on three carries.

Love had 75 yards on four carries, Martin finished with 67 on six carries, Moses finished with 50 yards on eight carries, Jeffress had 41 on five attempts, Rohrig added 38 yards on eight carries, Spatafore chipped in with 33 yards on five carries and rounding things out was Sam Goodwin with 14 yards on three carries.

The Indians finished with 489 yards of total offense, 415 on the ground and 74 through the air.

Preston ended up with 122 yards of offense.

The Indians are on a bye next week and will close out the regular season with a Week 10 home game against Linsley, marking the first-ever meeting between the two schools. They will then travel to Lincoln in Week 11.
