Indians Bests Brooke

Win Secures A 56th Non-Losing Season

Box Score

Six different players scored and the defense came up with another dominant performance as Class AAA No. 11 Bridgeport defeated No. 15 Brooke, 49-14, Friday night at Bud Billiard Field in what was the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

The victory also extends Bridgeport's state-record streak of non-losing seasons to 56.

BHS limited the Bruins to just 13 yards rushing and only 146 total yards, forcing three turnovers along the way.

"I was proud of our kids," BHS coach Tyler Phares said. "It's tough to come on a long road trip and win a football game. I thought we could have played better and I think we will play better. A great week of practice leads to a great game and I didn't think we practiced the best this week."

The Indians, who as a team had 48 tackles for a loss prior to kickoff, added to that total early. Cam Martin and Josh Love teamed up to bring down Brooke's Gavin Moore for a loss of 4 on the first play from scrimmage. Following an incomplete pass, Beau Ford and Aidan Sparks joined forces to sack Braelyn Sperringer and force a punt. BHS would go on to finish with seven tackles for a loss in the game.

The Indians countered with a nine-play drive that was capped by Josh Love's 3-yard TD run. Avery Williams kicked his first of seven PATs to make it 7-0.

The Bruins had a little more success on their second drive before Sparks and Martin brought down Moore for a loss of 1 on a third down run. Martin then broke up a pass on fourth down to give the ball back to the Tribe.

Bridgeport was forced to punt for the first time since Week 2 against Morgantown but Zach Rohrig's line drive punt hit a Brooke player in the ankle and Ford recovered to allow the Tribe to keep possession

Five plays later, Jack Spatafore scored on a 7-yard run to extend the lead to 14-0 with 8:27 left in the second quarter.

The BHS defense came up big on the ensuing drive as Sperringer was under heavy pressure from Sparks and Ford and his pass was intercepted by Tanner Hathaway.

The Indians' backfield depth came to the forefront on the next drive. Alex Moses ripped off a run of 22 on first down and two plays later Tim Jeffress scored his first varsity touchdown on a 4-yard run to make it 21-0 with 4:18 to go in the first half.

Jeffress became the ninth different back to get a rushing TD this year for the Tribe.

"The depth we have is huge especially going down the stretch," Phares said. "You are going to need change of pace backs. You are going to need a kid that can step up do different things whether it's throw, block, catch, break tackles."

Cale Culicerto intercepted his second pass of the season to force the third Brooke turnover of the half and the Indians once again made the Bruins pay.

Spatafore completed a 38-yard pass to Donovan Williams to get the ball inside the red zone. Three plays later, Rohrig was into the end zone with a 1-yard run, his 11th touchdown of the season and the Tribe would go on to take a 28-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Drive number five for the Indians went for 15 plays and chewed up roughly 8 minutes off the third quarter clock. On fourth-and-7, Spatafore and Williams connected again. Williams reeled in the pass in traffic, fighting off three Brooke defenders, securing the Tribe's first TD through the air this season and a 35-0 lead.

Brooke avoided the shutout as Moore scored on a 11-yard TD run, a play he helped set up by returning a kick deep into BHS territory.

Moses countered with his own big special teams play returning a kick 60 yards. Five plays later he became the sixth different BHS player to score in the game, running into the end zone on a 13-yard run.

The Bruins tacked on a score when Anthony Bachinski caught a 43-yard TD pass from Ty Sperringer, the younger brother of Braelyn Sperringer who left with an injury, making it 42-14.

Moses found the end zone for a second time, scoring on a 58-yard touchdown run to make it 49-14.

"At first I'm just thinking, 'Get there, get there,'" Moses said. "When I see green I just go. My first priority is always to get the first down. If I get there and I see green, I'm looking for the end zone."

Moses finished with a team-best 93 yards on three carries. Rohrig added 72 yards on 15 carries and Love had 56 yards on 12 carries. The Indians finished with 292 yards on the ground and 45 through the air for 337 total yards.
