State Champs

Box Score In Bridgeport's collection of football state championships is a lineup of opponents pounded into submission by the stick-I and the power pistol. This afternoon, the Indians winged it for state championship number 11.

Behind a single wing offense that proved unstoppable all season, Bridgeport imposed its will on Herbert Hoover and walked away with the Class AAA title by a 49-7 score at Laidley Field in Charleston.

The Tribe finished the year 14-0. The Huskies ended the season at 13-1.

"I'm happy for the kids, I'm happy for the program, and I'm happy for the community," said Coach Tyler Phares, who captured his first title as a head coach after winning one as an assistant with BHS in a slugfest with Bluefield in 2019. "Our kids and our assistant coaches worked their tails off. Without them, we couldn't do anything. I'm very happy for everyone involved."

This game, unlike the 2019 affair, was never in doubt.

Just how dominant was Bridgeport? They were dominant like they had been since week one as the title game, like the 13 games before it, ended with a running clock.

Bridgeport, which averaged 387 yards on the ground per game this year, rushed for 364 yards – in the first half. By game's end, the Indians had a whopping 431 yards to break the all-time Class AAA championship mark for yards in a game and totaled the most yards on the ground in a season any BHS team in history.

The Indians averaged 12 yards per carry in the win and had three individuals going over 100 yards. Alex Moses led the way with seven carries for 141 yards and two scores. Josh Love added 12 carries for 128 yards and a touchdown, while Tim Jeffress added nine runs for 115 yards and two scores.

"It's just a group effort. If you stop me, how are you going to stop Timmy? You stop Timmy, how are you going to stop Josh or Jack (Spatafore)? You stop one of them, how are you going to stop me? It's been all of us, all year long," said Moses, who was named the Indians' most valuable player in the contest.
