Box Score Brooke's first-ever trip to Wayne Jamison Field went about as well as it has for regular visitors as of late as Class AAA No. 2 Bridgeport remained unbeaten with a convincing 54-0 victory against the Bruins.
Â
As has been the case all season long, the BHS offense was balanced and prolific putting up 446 yards of total offense, the run defense was stout allowing just 15 yards, the special team play was solid once again but perhaps what really stood out was the pass defense, which has been good all year, but against the Bruins, the play there really stood out.
Â
Brooke quarterback Ty Sperringer completed 6-of-17 passes for 52 yards and threw a pair of interceptions. Thirty-six of those passing yards came on one completion to Owen Haught and it was followed by three straight tackles right around the line of scrimmage to force a punt.
Â
At least three different times, Sperringer completed a short pass in the flat and by the time his receiver reeled the ball in, at least six BHS defenders were there to prevent the play from going anywhere.
Â
"The kids are playing with a lot of confidence," BHS coach Tyler Phares said of his secondary in particular on defense. "Coach (Casey) Stewart has done an excellent job with those guys. When you play more confident, you play with your feet underneath you, you sprint around and you make plays and good things are going to have.
Â
"Something we practice all the time is perimeter drills and sprinting to the ball to make plays. It's good to see it's paying off."
Â
Of the Indians' 446 yards, 400 came on the ground with
Jack Spatafore leading the way with 138 yards on nine carries and four touchdowns.
Josh Love had 82 yards on nine carries.
Tim Jeffress found the end zone three times and had 51 yards and three touchdowns. The production of that trio all came in the first half as for the sixth straight game, Bridgeport's starters were out of the game by halftime and the second half was played with a running clock.
Â
There was little drop off in the second half though as
Graham Vincent put up 62 yards on nine carries with a touchdown and
Aiden Gorby added 44 yards on seven carries.
Â
After the defense forced a three-and-out on Brooke's initial possession of the game, the Indians needed just four plays to put points on the board. Each of the four plays were on the ground and each picked up a first down. Spatafore got the first carry for 12 yards. Following gains of 14 and 18 by Jeffress and Love, respectively, Spatafore punched it in for an 11-yard touchdown run.
Gavin Williams booted his first of six PAT kicks to make it 7-0.
Â
Spatafore came up with a big play on defense on the ensuing possession as her intercepted his second pass of the season.
Three plays later, Jeffress scored on a 6-yard run to make it 14-0.
