After an ACL injury brought her senior volleyball season at Bridgeport to an early end,
Salam Rajjoub did a lot of thinking.
Â
"It was just a really hard process of deciding if I still wanted to play and just seeing the options that I had," Rajjoub said.Â
Â
But when Kris Kern, the new volleyball coach at Glenville State University and the winningest high school volleyball coach in the state of Ohio before stints at West Virginia State and the University of Pikeville, came calling, Rajjoub was sold.
Â
"When I went on my visit, it just really felt like home. I loved the campus. I loved the people and the atmosphere," Rajjoub said.
Â
Rajjoub loved it so much, she signed with the Pioneers to continue her volleyball career.
Â
"At first I was just like, I'm done. It's hard…it took a lot of communication and prayer. It was a conversation that I had every day with my parents and coaches," Rajjoub said. "But once I went on that visit and talked to coach Kern, I decided I didn't want to stop. My journey wasn't over yet."
Â
Rajjoub also got good advice from former teammates like Myleigh Smell and Kaylee Enfield and "even from my friends who decided not to play, just getting both perspectives and what they experienced. Every experience is different."
Â
Rajjoub is continuing to recover from that injury to her left knee on Sept. 25, which caused her to miss over half of the season. Still, she put up 211 kills (4.1 per set), 32 aces and 114 digs.
Â
She still was a second-team all-Big 10 selection last year.
Â
"It's going well. I'm six months in now and just getting better every day. It's scary, but like I said, it's achievable. I'm ready to go back at it and play," Rajjoub said. "It was just a little bump in my journey."
Â
Kern's 805-86 record in Ohio looks like a typo, but it's real.
Â
"He has a really great mindset and pushes us to be the best, even if we're not physically there. I'm ready to be under his mentorship and leadership."
