Jacob Stravakis didn't have complete command of his fastball against Class AAA No. 2 Fairmont Senior on Tuesday.
What Stravakis did have — effective off-speed pitches and the usual competitive nature that's often allowed him to thrive — was plenty good enough to contain a Polar Bear offense that had been on a torrid pace.
Stravakis allowed one run in the first inning, another in the seventh and nothing in between, while the No. 3 Tribe utilized a five-run fourth inning to pull away for an 8-2 home victory.
"He had his slider working and the curve ball was dropping in there, but he didn't locate his fastball. He was around 40 percent with his fastball location and he's way better than that, but it's good to go out there, not have your best outing and still get a win," Indians' head coach Robert Shields said. "That's a positive."
Cam Peschl's leadoff double just inside the third base bag helped amount to a Matt Masters sacrifice fly and the game's first run, though the Polar Bears' had a runner thrown out at the plate and stranded two in scoring position in the opening inning.
"That was big to only give up one run and fight his way through that," Shields said.Â
Fairmont Senior (14-3) starting pitcher Logan Canfield was flawless through the first two innings, retiring all six batters he faced.Â
But starting with Stravakis' leadoff double in the home half of the third, things started to turn squarely in Bridgpeort's favor. Courtesy runner Sam Romano scored the tying run on a wild pitch in that frame, and after Michael Romano worked a walk, stole second and moved to third on an errant pickoff attempt, he scored the go-ahead run on Luke Rohrig's sharp single to center.
"Things are going to happen in this game, because they always do. It's how we respond to it and they responded better than we did," Fairmont Senior head coach Dave Ricer said.
Seizing the momentum, Stravakis retired the side in order in the fourth.
Moments later, a leadoff error the allowed Carson Currey to reach when Bridgeport came to bat proved costly for the Polar Bears. Owen Sondericker and Jaxson McNally each followed with a single, the latter of which came on a bunt to load the bases. When Canfield walked Stravakis, it forced in the Indians' third run, and Sam Goodwin would double the advantage on a two-run single to center.
"We didn't have good plate appearances in the first inning and it was an eight-pitch inning," Shields said. "We had to get better quality at bats and Jacob led off with that double in the third inning, we moved people around and did some good things and settled into having a good approach at the plate."
A second error in the inning allowed Sam Romano and Goodwin to score and marked the end of Canfield's outing on the mound as he exited with the Polar Bears trailing 7-1.
Stravakis erased Cole Sammons' leadoff single in the fifth by inducing a ground ball that amounted to a double play off the bat of Peschl.
BHS loaded the bases with one out in the sixth and added to its advantage on a Jack Gould ground ball to shortstop that brought home Goodwin.
Fairmont Senior's Brock Martin led off the seventh with a home run to left, though Stravakis retired the next two batters, including his second strikeout. After allowing a two-out single to Peschl, Stravakis was replaced by Scott Why, who threw one pitch and recorded the final out.
Both teams finished with seven hits, but the Indians were far more sound defensively in putting an end to the Polar Bears' win streak at seven.
"We didn't put enough pressure on them early. We got off to a good start and kind of fizzled, and then they put some pressure on us and we didn't make the plays," Ricer said. "That's typical Bridgeport baseball. They put the ball in play and let you screw up. We didn't make enough plays."
