Moving On

Veteran Bridgeport basketball coach Dave Marshall makes no secret that he and his teams are always going to be defensive-minded above and beyond anything else.

His target for every opponent is to hold them to 10 points or less in a quarter and the Indians accomplish that feat frequently. On Friday though, they nearly did the unthinkable – holding an opponent scoreless for an 8-minute stretch.

Berkeley Springs' Landen Schetrompf hit a 3-pointer with 21 seconds left in the third quarter. That was it. The only points allowed by Bridgeport as they delivered a knockout punch in the Class AAA Region II opener with a 27-3 advantage in the third on the way to a 77-30 victory.

The win extended Bridgeport's win streak to 19 games and improved their overall record to 22-1. Next up is the Region II co-final against Hampshire (a 55-51 winner against Keyser) next Thursday at BHS with a spot in the state tournament on the line.

"I don't want to say we didn't play very well on defense in the first half because I thought they passed the ball very well and we felt like there were just certain things we needed to do better," Marshall said. It was nice to see our guys adjust. I'm proud of our guys. I think we just grinded them down on defense."
